About Me: Born and raised in Memphis, TN; Attended Watkins Overton HS for the Creative and Performing Arts, the University of Memphis (BM), the University of Wisconsin -- Eau Claire (MM), and the University of Illinois (DMA in progress); Married to Denise (also a band teacher) for 25 years, have 3 kids: Andrea (19, attending A&M Commerce), Evan (17, a senior @ Graves Homeschool), and Jeremy (13, a 9th grader at Italy HS). This is my 19th year teaching instrumental music full-time and my 4th year as a Gladiator.
Activities and sports that I enjoy include collecting comic books, playing bass guitar, reading books (biography, history and inspirational), as well as the occasional game of disk golf.
I am proud to be a lifelong student and am always on the lookout for the opportunity to learn something new. I believe that music is sound learning, the universal language, and along with the other fine arts, the true measure of a society's identity and wealth.
“Arts education aids students in skills needed in the workplace: flexibility, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be creative and innovative, and to strive for excellence.”
– Joseph M. Calahan, Director of Cooperate Communications, Xerox Corporation
"A broad education in the arts helps give children a better understanding of their world…We need students who are culturally literate as well as math and science literate."
–Paul Ostergard, Vice President, Citicorp
“We need people who think with the creative side of their brains—people who have played in a band, who have painted…it enhances symbiotic thinking capabilities, not always thinking in the same paradigm, learning how to kick-start a new idea, or how to get a job done better, less expensively.”
–Annette Byrd, GlaxoSmithKline
"I believe that creativity will be the currency of the 21st century."
– Gerald Gordon, Ph.D., President/CEO, Fairfax County (Virginia) Economic Development Authority
